Instructions for Becoming an AYSO Referee

Thank you for your interest in becoming an AYSO referee with Rivertowns AYSO.  We are trying to get a program off the ground in our region. Please direct any questions to [email protected] after reading the below.

*** Requirements ***

AGE - Adults (parents of players) -- and youth 14 years and older

REGISTRATION - All AYSO volunteers, including adult and youth referees, must register in the AYSO online system. Adult volunteer registration also includes a background check; youth referees do not need to do a background check. Registering provides access to the necessary online training modules and allows volunteers to sign up for the required in-person course.

TRAINING - Safe Haven Course (online - approx 1 hour), Concussion Course (online - approx 30 mins), Referee Training (online / in person - time varies)

WEEKLY TIME COMMITMENT - Officiating Sunday games during an 8-weekend Fall and Spring soccer season.
Rivertowns AYSO games are held on Sundays from 10:00 am until 6:00 pm.
Parent referees would officiate their player's games.
Youth referees would sign up to officiate scheduled home 12U matches.

Step #1 - Register as a volunteer (10 minutes)

Use the REGISTER NOW button, upper right on this web site.

Click here for the step-by-step instructions from AYSO National to register as a YOUTH volunteer. A PARENT needs to take the initial step before the YOUTH can register.

**** Save any registration emails and remember your username and password. You will need it to log into AYSO University (AYSO U), where you access the necessary trainings.

Step #2 - Complete AYSO Safe Haven Training on AYSO U (1 hour)


Step #3 - Complete CDC: Concussion Course on AYSO U  (30 minutes)


Step #4 - Complete Online Referee Training (time varies) on AYSO  U 


Step #5 - Attend an In-Person Referee Training (time varies)

Navigate / search on local trainings in AYSO U -- register in advance for the one you plan to attend. Before you attend, complete the above online trainings.

The AYSO administrative level above Rivertowns AYSO -- called Area 3T -- offers trainings ahead of each season (usually a weekend or two in advance of the first game of the season). Area 3T includes all AYSO regions in Westchester.

For Spring 2020 -- Area 3T has shared with Rivertowns that they plan to hold trainings on March 28 at a Westchester location. The training will be listed in AYSO U when Area 3T determines the location and finalizes the schedule.
