What is the difference between the Core, Select/All-Stars, EXTRA, and Alliance programs?
AYSO offers multiple levels of play to meet the needs and goals of different players and families. Here’s a breakdown of each:
Fall Core Program
This is AYSO’s main recreational program and the foundation of all our offerings. It’s open to all players, with no tryouts required. Teams are formed to ensure balanced competition, and the focus is on learning, fun, and player development in a positive, inclusive environment. Most players begin their AYSO journey here.
Spring Select / All-Stars
This is an invitation-based program offered in the spring season. Players are selected from the Fall Core season based on skill, attitude, and sportsmanship. Select teams compete in more challenging matches against other regions and may participate in tournaments. It’s a great option for players seeking a more competitive experience without the full commitment of a year-round program.
EXTRA Program
EXTRA is a competitive, tryout-based program offered during the same time as the Fall Core season. It’s designed for more advanced players looking for stronger competition and more focused training, while still aligning with AYSO’s philosophies. EXTRA teams travel to play against other AYSO EXTRA teams within the section.
Alliance Program
Alliance is AYSO’s club-level competitive program, offering the highest level of play within the AYSO structure. Players participate in US Youth Soccer leagues and tournaments, often year-round, with licensed coaches and a more intensive training schedule. Alliance maintains AYSO’s focus on development, affordability, and sportsmanship, while competing at a level similar to traditional club teams.
Do You Offer Programs for Players with Special Needs?
Yes. The EPIC (Everyone Plays In our Community) program is available for players with physical or developmental disabilities, providing the same benefits as our core program at a reduced cost.
Do Registration Fees Pay Volunteers?
No. AYSO is a 100% volunteer-run organization. Board members, coaches, and referees receive no compensation. We rely on volunteers to help make the program possible and welcome support in all areas—from coaching and refereeing to field setup and board roles.
How Can I Volunteer?
We welcome all who want to make a difference. If you're interested in volunteering as a coach, referee, board member, or helper, please speak to any of our volunteers at the check-in tent on Saturdays or at the fields during the week. Our Regional Commissioner will follow up to get you started.
