Consistent with AYSO National policy, all coaches must be certified to coach at their team’s age level. For example, 12U coaches must be certified to the 12U level. This applies to both Head and Assistant Coaches.
San Luis Obispo AYSO 599 provides coach training and certification courses located in San Luis Obispo for levels 6U through 12U, usually in August and September of each year.
Higher level training (Intermediate for 14U, Advanced for 16U and 19U) is provided outside our region by AYSO Area Q (time tba), Section 10 and even National programs. See AYSOU tab when you log into your Blue Sombrero account to sign up.
Because all AYSO coach training follows a nationally mandated and standardized curriculum, you can attend any coach training event at any AYSO Region, for all age divisions. Coaches from outside San Luis Obispo are welcome to attend our courses. This provides a wide range of options and dates in addition to the training offered within our Region.
The minimum coach certification level by age division is as follows:
Division | | Certification Requirement |
6U | | 6U |
8U | | 8U |
10U | | 10U |
12U | | 12U |
14U | | Intermediate |
16U and 18U | | Advanced |
Please note that the 10U, 12U, Intermediate, and Advanced coach training program have two elements – a classroom component and an on-field component. You must complete all, and be signed off by the course instructor at the end of each session, to be certified in the 10U, 12U, Intermediate and Advanced divisions.
For the 6U and 8U divisions we strongly encourage taking our AYSO 599 live course when offered because we believe the on-field component is important. However, it is also possible to take the 6U and 8U entirely on-line at AYSOU. Please contact your Division Coordinator who will provide a voucher to download the class to your AYSOU account.
It is advisable to complete the Safe Haven, CDC Concussion Awareness, CA sudden Cardiac Arrest, US Soccer SafeSport and be CA DOJ fingerprinted before attending these sessions.
For the on-field portion, please wear soccer attire and bring a hat, plenty of water and sunblock.
