Castaic AYSO - Region 1441

Referees

All AYSO referees are volunteer parents, teenagers and community members, and they are key to the success of the program.  Referee courses are conducted a few weeks before the season begins (usually early August).  No soccer experience is necessary; we'll teach you everything you need to know.

Instructions for Registering for the Castaic 2024 (and other) Referee Training Courses

VERY IMPORTANT:  EVERY user in a family should have their own unique email address.  99% of people having problems is because they used their own personal email addresses for their kids or spouses.  Duplicate EMAIL addresses will break everything.
Also, if you’re having trouble logging in, you can try using “safe mode” or “incognito mode” on your browser so it won’t have old cookies or login info.

Steps for becoming a referee:

First: REGISTER AS A VOLUNTEER – If you are already a registered volunteer skip to the next section.

LiveScan requirements apply to “Regular Volunteers” which is defined as “a person who has direct contact with children 16 hours a month or 32 hours per year.” Most referees do not referee for that many hours (but it would be great if you did!) If it looks like you will, you can do the LiveScan at a later date. Or you can do it now.

Follow the instructions here to do your LiveScan:
AYSO LiveScan

SECTION 3 – Becoming a referee

In addition to the referee training, you will need to complete Safe Haven, Cardiac Arrest, and CDC/Concussion Awareness training in “etrainu”.

“etrainu” is a separate training website where you can take online training courses for coaching and refereeing. It is accessed through the Blue Sombrero/Sports Affinity site; you must sign in there first (you can’t login to etrainu directly).

All AYSO referees will need to complete either Option 1 – the two Part Online/In-Person hybrid training class or Option 2 – the All-Day (8-hour) in person referee training course. The Castaic course is the Online/In-Person hybrid course.

Option 1 (for the Castaic course):

  1. Login to your account at Blue Sombrero/Sports Affinity.  Click on the “Volunteer” button on the left-hand side of the screen.  Under your name there will be an “AYSOU” button, click that button to open the etrainu system.

    2.  If you are logged into your account and the button does not show up then your background check expired and you will need to redo your background check.

      2. Both courses must be completed - the "Regional Referee" portion must be done online before you attend the in-person course.

  5. Attend the 3 hour in-person Referee Companion course you registered for.

FINISHED?
If you have done everything above or are renewing the required certifications to be an AYSO volunteer you should have the following completed:
1.  Safe Haven – etrainu
2.  Cardiac Arrest – etrainu
3.  Concussion Awareness -etrainu
4.  Regional Referee Training – etrainu + 1/2 day class time or ALL day class
5.  SAFE Sport – On the AYSO 1441 Blue Sombrero/Sports Affinity volunteer profile.

7.  California Mandated Fingerprinting – AYSO – AYSO 1441 Blue Sombrero/Sports Affinity your volunteer profile.Advice for youth referees and other volunteers.

  1. Additional Volunteer Users – users volunteering outside of the registration system will volunteer his/herself or add a new user to volunteer.  If the volunteer now becomes an additional user, he/she will want to log in to the email account that was used to register the person as an additional volunteer and accept the invite to create a Username/Password on Blue Sombrero to get them access to AYSOU.
  2. AYSOU Certifications – Certifications will port over from AYSOU to Etrain once the user volunteers, based on the system recognizing the volunteer ID.  If the certifications do not port over, there is a mismatch in the ID.  To ensure the best results DO NOT CREATE another account.
  3. All volunteers must have their own account tied to their own unique email address.  A youth watching the videos on a parent’s account or a spouse watching the videos and doing the courses on their spouses’ account will not count and we cannot award credit after the fact.

2023 Referee LiveScan Requirement

CALIFORNIA AB 506 – BACKGROUND CHECK/LIVESCAN UPDATE FOR CA VOLUNTEERS

All administrators, employees and regular volunteers in California MUST have a one-time background check as approved by the California Department of Justice to exclude individuals with a history of child abuse. This form of background check requires live scan fingerprinting.

To clarify, REGULAR VOLUNTEER is a person who has direct contact with children 16 hours a month or 32 hours per year, which applies to most coaches, referees, team parents, and board members who spend 2 or more hours on the field weekly.

SAFESPORT MANDATORY TRAINING FOR VOLUNTEERS

The 2017 SafeSport Act has expanded Mandated Reporters to include adults authorized to interact with children. Due to this expansion, that includes AYSO and it requires training on child abuse and mandated reporting.

Effective,January 1, 2022,U.S. Soccer will no longer allow equivalent training* and has mandated SafeSport training.

What does this mean for AYSO?

AYSO will comply with the federal SafeSport training requirement and we will integrate with the U.S. Soccer Education and Learning Center as well as their Player Health and Safety Courses.

The training is the full course in the first year, which is 90 minutes, and repeated every three years, followed by annual updates in the in-between years, which are 30 minutes.

How will it work?

You will be able to access the SafeSport training by following these instructions:

  1. Login to your Sports Connect account where you registered as a volunteer.
  2. Click on the volunteer tab on the left-hand side of the screen
  3. Click on SafeSport box
  4. Click on Renew and Update
  5. A screen will pop up where you will click on the “click HERE” link or copy and paste the URL into your browser to begin training

Note: Youth Volunteers (anyone under the age of majority in your state) are not required to take this training.

The default integration uses the U.S. Center for Safesport, as seen above. Once you take the course, the USSF results will update the AYSO Association Platform and be sent to Safesport for their records.

If you have already taken it, those historic statuses will be brought over on January 1, 2022 and will reflect this information as a separate line item on the compliance.

*Please Note:

  • AYSO Volunteers will still need to take AYSO’s Safe Haven course as well.
  • SafeSport is now a required certificate in the Association platform. In order to activate teams and print out official rosters your team admins will need to complete SafeSport.

For a PDF download of the above, instructions on how to check for complianceand an updated FAQ, please visit:https://aysovolunteers.org/safesport-mandatory-training/.

If you have any questions on the process, please email[email protected].
