Want to become a PRO?
(Player Referee Opportunity Program)
In AYSO we rely completely on volunteers for all of our positions including board members, coaches, and referees. We are always in need of willing volunteers of all ages to step up and help in these positions. One of our biggest needs is Referees because soccer without a Referee is just a scrimmage.
Do I have to be an adult to volunteer?
In several of our volunteer positions such as Board Members and Coaches the answer is yes, but Referees are special. We have a special program for Players age 10 and older where they can volunteer. This is our Player Referee Opportunity Program or PRO for short.
How do I become a Referee?
The referee is responsible for enforcing the Laws of the Game in such a way as to keep the game safe, fair and fun for everyone: the players, the coaches, the spectators and themselves. He/She interferes with the game as little as possible, avoiding making calls for doubtful and trifling offenses. Referees only make calls for offenses they are sure occurred. To become a Referee you must be age 10 or older and complete the following steps:
1.) Register as an AYSO volunteer
2.) Complete Safe Haven and CDC Concussion Awareness Training (Online)
3.) Learn the Laws of the Game by completing a Referee Training class & exam
4.) Sign-up in our Regional Referee Scheduling System and schedule yourself for a match
That’s it, four simple steps and you can be out on the pitch as the match official refereeing a game.
What are the benefits of becoming a Referee?
There are several benefits to volunteering as a Referee, but here are a few specific to our PRO program:
1.) Volunteer hours count toward High School and College requirements
2.) Volunteer Points count toward your team’s 30 points to qualify for playoffs.
3.) Volunteer Points can be used as currency to earn gear, equipment, or other soccer related items.
4.) You learn the game of soccer as well as tactics and laws of the game that can help to make you a better soccer player.
5.) You learn leadership skills as well as public speaking and public service skills.
6.) Experienced Referees 14 years of age or older may advance to earn their Intermediate Badge and qualify as a USSF Grade 8 Referee,
allowing you to Referee USSF Sanctioned matches and make money.
