AYSO’s Safe Haven: Keeping AYSO Players and Volunteers Safe

REGISTER AS A VOLUNTEER WITH AYSO: Click Here to access your account

We take the safety of our athletes seriously. Precautions are taken on the field to prevent physical injuries, and precautions are taken off the field to ensure children and volunteers are safe in their interactions with each other.

AYSO’s Safe Haven program has been put in place to protect AYSO players and the volunteers who serve them. It requires that each AYSO volunteer complete and eSign a volunteer application each and every year, agreeing to background checks and to abide by the philosophies and policies of AYSO.

Safe Haven FAQs

Every AYSO volunteer must apply and be accepted as a volunteer. Volunteers are also asked to complete Safe Haven and job specific training in order to become trained and certified. AYSO in-person or online training focuses on the best ways to work with children and important safety protocols. Becoming Safe Haven certified takes some time, but AYSO volunteers know it’s worth it.

Also, did you know that every AYSO Region is required to designate a volunteer to act as the Child and Volunteer Protection Advocate (CVPA)? A CVPA helps implement Safe Haven policies at the local level. Contact our CVPA with any questions regarding registering as a volunteer to work with MDSA.

AYSO is so proud of our Safe Haven program – it was the first of its kind in youth sports, most notably in soccer. It creates a safe environment for players and volunteers to have a happy and healthy soccer experience.

It takes a lot of dedicated people to make AYSO possible, and volunteers are always needed. If you are interested in participating, contact our Volunteer Coordinator.

Coaching Program

Because "Positive Coaching" is one of AYSO's guiding philosophies, coach training is one of our highest priorities. Through AYSO, our region also provides a wide range of courses to continue instructing its volunteer coaches, along with our highly experienced and supportive Coach Administration team (Email Coach Admin).

No Experience? No Problem

  • Our volunteer coaches receive complete training right from the beginning!
  • Training and certification for all coaches.
  • Age-specific coaching courses provide training for coaches of every level of experience.
  • Complete with manuals, handouts and outlines that are continually reviewed and updated.
We Don't Stop There!
  • Supplemental local instruction programs, camps and clinics.
  • Held throughout the country, throughout the year.

Officiating Program

AYSO referees do more than just enforce the Laws of the Game. Their job is to make sure the game is safe and enjoyable for everyone: the players, the coaches, the spectators—and themselves.

  • Referee training that teaches not only the letter of the law, but the "Spirit of the Game."
  • Six levels of AYSO referee training.
  • USSF cross-certification.
  • Training for referee instructors, administrators and assessors.
  • Youth Referee Program.
  • AYSO referees are volunteers, so we want to be sure they have as much fun as the players do.

Management Program

Because a smooth running program means more fun for everyone, AYSO provides extensive management training for its volunteers. Introductory/Intermediate/Advanced Regional Management courses teach AYSO's league administrators how to manage their local programs. AYSO also provides in-depth operational manuals to assist administrators at every level in all aspects of their AYSO program.
