If you are like many parents, you know absolutely nothing about soccer. So how could you possibly be a coach? The answer is training - FREE training. It is the goal of AYSO that each coach be a trained, certified coach. Each season, we offer various levels of training classes for our coaches. The coaching classes are age (division) specific, with soccer skills and techniques appropriate to the age of the children.
How much time does it take to be a coach?
The AYSO season lasts 10 weeks, 2 weeks of pre-season practice with 8 weeks of games. Teams generally practice 1 night per week. Practice time is limited to no more than 3 hours per week. Plus, it takes a bit of time for training, a pre-season coaches meeting, and some time each week to plan your practice/game strategy.
What night will my team practice?
Each season, we hold a lottery for teams to select their practice nights. However, our Coach Administrator will work with you if you have a special need.
Even if I would take a training class, I'm still not sure I could be a coach!
A good idea is to start out as an Assistant Coach for a season. This gives you a chance to work with an experienced coach and get some on-the-job training. Then, by the next season, you will have gained in skill and confidence and will be ready to be the Coach.
