Referees

Referees are Volunteers

As with all of the roles at AYSO Region 254, ALL OF OUR REFEREES ARE VOLUNTEERS

Please be kind to and respectful of all referees. They are fellow parents and friends from our community, who are donating their valuable free time to the league, to help provide high-quality, low-cost soccer for all of our kids.  Please thank them for donating their weekends for our kids.

Please support your child's team and volunteer to referee.
All training is provided, as well as uniform and equipment.

WHY REFEREE?

Why should you become an AYSO Referee? It's rewarding, you learn about this beautiful game, and working with kids is great fun! What better way to learn about the game of soccer, for both yourself and your children, than to take a class on the Laws of the Game. You can become a better coach, better supportive soccer parent, and better soccer fan if you really understand the game.

Also, WE NEED YOU!! We can’t have games without referees. Lots of referees. We need a Referee (Center Referee) and 2 Assistant Referees (Linesmen) for each game. The referee’s job is to be the official in charge of the game. The Referee is the independent arbiter and manager of the game. The Referee's authority extends to everyone at the field, including players, substitutes, team officials, spectators, and even assistant referees.

The referee is responsible for enforcing the Laws of the Game in such a way as to keep the game safe, fair, and fun for everyone: the players, the coaches, the spectators and themselves. The Referee interferes with the game as little as possible, avoiding making calls for doubtful and trifling offenses. Referees only make calls for offenses they are sure occurred.

We want our kids to continue to play, and they keep playing as long as it is fun. AYSO Referee training is designed to aid the Referee to interpret the Laws of the Game in an age appropriate manner to help ensure a Fun, Fair, and Safe environment for all involved

2018 AYSO Player Development Initiative
Covers the referee implementation of 10U and 12U PDI in Section 1

6U & 8U
Throw-ins

Throw-ins are replaced by Kick-ins.  We have decided to stop allowing "dribble-ins".  The player must place the ball on the ground and kick it into play.  That player may not be the next player to touch the ball.  And, like throw-ins, no goal may be scored directly off of a kick-in, and opponents must be 2 yards away from the restart.

12U
Keeper Punts

Keepers are allowed to punt the ball in 12U

10U
Keeper Punts

No Punting
RESTART: IFK, if inside the goal area, ball is moved to goal area line parallel to goal line

Build-out line
For a goal-kick or keeper possession, the opponents must retreat behind the build-out line.
If the keeper does not choose to wait, then an opponent who has not retreated is allowed to intercept the ball.
This has been a cause for confusion.

Goal Keeper Possession
a. Opponents move behind BOL
b. Opponents may cross BOL once the ball is released from the Goal Keeper's hands
c. If opponents cross BOL before Keeper releases ball, and interfere with play:
RESTART: IFK on BOL where infraction occurred
d.. Ball may be kicked to any point on the field

Goal Kick
a. Opponents move behind BOL
b. Opponents may cross BOL once the ball is kicked and moves
c. If opponents cross BOL before ball is put into play, and interfere with play:
RESTART: IFK on BOL where infraction occurred
d
. Ball may be kicked to any point on the field

Build-out line is used to determine offside for 10U (no longer halfway line)
