AYSO Region 12 South Torrance

AYSO Player Pathway

The Region 12 Board of Directors is proud to announce the introduction of EXTRA Teams for Boys and Girls for Players born in 2012 and 2013 for the Fall 2023 season!

What is AYSO EXTRA?

AYSO EXTRA is a program that provides the opportunity for highly skilled players to play soccer at a more challenging level. Each year, AYSO regions lose players and volunteers (coaches and refs) to club organizations because their children want to play soccer at the highest possible level of competition. EXTRA allows players to play against the best teams from nearby regions and areas to experience a higher level of competition while keeping costs reasonable and travel commitments light.

Organization

AYSO Region 12’s Board has voted to participate and will form teams in divisions where an adequate number of qualified players tryout and where qualified coaches volunteer. In the event there are enough players in any two-year division, we will consider forming multiple single-year division teams. Members of all Extra teams will NOT be placed on regular season teams – they will have their own practice times, coaches and schedules.

Please Note: Divisions will be formed as player interest and talent allows. Region 1 reserves the right to amend the divisions, as needed, to maintain the best experience for the players and for proper player development..

So how does it work?

All players are eligible to try out for an Extra Team. Extra season tryouts are conducted to assist in the formation of teams for the coming year. There will be one or two tryouts per division depending on the number of players trying out in a specific division. Players are required to attend one tryout and are encouraged to participate in all tryout sessions available to them.An evaluation team, comprised of coaches and Board members who are not affiliated with a specific division, will evaluate the players and then will meet with the Board-approved head coach to select a team based upon the results of the tryouts and previous player performance. Dates and times of tryouts will be announced at a later date.

Extra teams play a regular season of 10-14 games against teams from AYSO Section 1 from August through early December. In February, Extra teams will play in a postseason tournament to determine a “Champion” who will move on to play in the Section Extra Tournament Winners at Section move on to the Western States Championships. All our EXTRA teams will be encouraged to participate in tournaments in the December-June time frame to improve skills and to get a chance to travel and compete against teams from other Areas.

Player/Parent Volunteer Commitment

As AYSO Extra is a division of AYSO, an all-volunteer, nonprofit youth soccer association. All parents are required to perform volunteer duties for the Region 12 core program as well as the EXTRA program as set forth by the host region and AYSO Extra guidelines. These volunteer obligations are in addition to any team obligations or fundraising efforts. Refusal or neglect of your responsibilities may result in sanctions, up to and including suspension from the team. All EXTRA teams are required to provide a referee team. Failure to provide a referee team from among the parents will prohibit an EXTRA team from being formed.

Finances

EXTRA programs are primary programs, and therefore, Region funds may be used to support EXTRA activities, but only to the extent that they are consistent with the funds expended for the standard primary program. Each player will register and pay the appropriate fee for the regular fall AYSO season. If selected for the EXTRA team, the player will need to make a choice to accept that commitment and will be responsible to pay an additional fee. Fees for 2023-2024 are expected to be in the $650 range. These fees will cover the costs for a second uniform, practice t-shirts, advanced trainers and entry fees (including referee fees) for two tournaments. Please note that additional items like backpacks, sweat suits, additional tournaments, etc. would be at an additional cost to each player. It will be up to each team to decide on these items. Scholarships may be available for families in need.

Player Eligibility

Eligible players must be registered with AYSO and must have participated in an evaluation process as determined by the Region. Any players not chosen will be notified and will be placed on regular fall season teams.Players who have not registered yet may participate in tryouts. If selected, those players would then need to register and also pay the EXTRA fee. Players are encouraged to register early to take advantage of early registration discounts. Players will be subject to the fees in place at the time they register to play in Region 12.

Coach Application and Eligibility

Coaches are selected by the Region 12 Extra Program committee and are approved by the Board, based on experience and demonstrated adherence to the AYSO six philosophies.

Commitment and Conduct

AYSO EXTRA is a special program. Players and families who participate must realize that this is a big commitment. We ask that this be the child’s primary activity as it will involve significant practice time and some travel time to away games. Players who play on other club teams or travel teams are eligible to play with the approval of the Region 12 Regional Commissioner or Extra Program Coordinator. Activities and participation in other sports should be limited or discouraged and the commitment to the EXTRA team should always take priority..

Player and parent sideline behavior must be in accordance with AYSO guidelines. The kids are playing a game to have fun. While being competitive is a goal, oftentimes winning or losing is taken way too seriously. Developing the whole player – both in skills and in their ability to deal with adversity and challenges is the ultimate goal in youth sports. Remember that you will be playing AYSO regions in other cities, and it’s important that you represent well not only yourself and family, but AYSO Region 12 as well. Players may be removed from the team if the code of conduct is not followed.

Team Formation

Teams will be formed according to the approved selection procedures, as described below.Teams must undergo new selections each membership year. There are no guaranteed roster positions for any player from one membership year to the next.
