AYSO Region 55 2017-18 Section 11 Region of the Year! 2017-2018 Area 11K Region of the Year!

Hello Region 55 Families:

As you may have heard, AYSO National has instituted a player development initiative that applies to players in the 8U division. Specifically, the player development initiative calls for all players who play in the 8U and younger divisions to play 4 vs. 4, with small goals and no goalkeepers. The intent behind this initiative is to get players as many touches on the ball as possible in the younger age groups . . . less players on the field at a time means that each player will touch the ball more.

Of course, this has been the case for quite some time with Region 55's 6U division. However, our 8U division has historically played 6 vs. 6, with larger goals and a goalkeeper. As a region, we believe that this player development initiative will benefit our players greatly moving forward and we are excited to see its effect on their technical development. We hope that you, as the parents of our players, are as excited as we are. And ultimately, the player development initiative is a directive from AYSO National, and individual regions do not have the discretion to choose whether or not it will be implemented.

That said, individual AYSO regions have been given a smaill amount of leeway in the timing of this transition and we understand that a sudden change to the way the game is played may be concerning to some parents and confusing to players; particularly those players who will be starting their 2nd 8U season this fall, and have already experienced the larger field, bigger goals, and the thrill of playing goalkeeper.

In order to address this issue, Region 55 will be splitting up what would have typically been the 8U division in the fall. Rather than have players born in both 2011 and 2012 play in the same division, we will be placing players born in 2011 in an 8U division, which will follow the format that the players are familiar with from last year (6 vs. 6), while players born in 2012 will be placed in a 7U division, which will implement the new player development initiative. In this way, we can make the changes without creating confusion on the part of our "veteran" 8U players. When the 7U players from this coming fall age up to 8U, they will again play in the 4 vs. 4 format.
