U5 Boys Jamboree

The AYSO U5 Jamboree One-with-One program is a specially designed program for children that are 4 years of age as of July 31st for the fall season or Feb 28th for the spring season. Every child must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at every session. One-with-One means that each player has a parent or guardian with them on the field serving as their personal coach.

Before the start of each season, there is a mandatory U5 Parents Meeting to discuss the program. Email updates will be sent to all the families periodically. If you do not receive emails, please send an email to [email protected] to have your correct address added to our system.

The U5 Jamboree Program is specially designed for young children. It introduces children and their parents to AYSO.

Due to the age of the children in the Jamboree format, U5 does not have formal "teams" with team coaches or referees like older divisions. Instead, the skill training (practice) and games are incorporated into the weekly Jamboree sessions held every Saturday of the season under the direction of a Master Coach where every parent coaches their own child.

The central coach role for all of U5 is filled jointly by the U5 Program Manager(s) together with the U5 Master Coach while each parent provides 1:1 coaching to their own child during activity sessions. The U5 Program Manager(s) handle many administrative functions and recruits other parents to handle snacks, picture day prep, sweatshirt ordering, etc as needed. The "coach" who is identified for each squad helps coordinate communication among parents on his/her squad.

Players will learn the following skills in U5: In addition, your child will:
  • Respecting opponents (Good Sportsmanship)
  • Dribbling & shooting
  • Following a few basic rules of the game
    • How to score
    • Ball in & out of play
    • Kickoff
    • Throw-in
    • Goal kick
  • Develop his/her own style of handling the ball
  • Learn how to move in a variety of situations
  • Improve his/her coordination (mobility, agility, reaction speed)
  • Work together as a team toward a common goal
  • Learn to deal with both victory and defeat
  • Have FUN playing the game of soccer

Many U5 activities do not look like traditional soccer: developing basic skills like climbing, balancing, hopping, throwing, jumping and so on play a valuable role in the long-term development of soccer skills.

The objective of this program is to provide young players and their parents with an easy introduction to the beautiful game of soccer. At this age players & parents should be exposed to soccer by playing simple, fun activities and games that require little to no practice, and a minimal time commitment.

Children learn best when they can experience playing the game without worrying about what position they should be playing! It’s natural to change positions from game to game, and even during a single game to either score goals or stop the other team scoring.

During the Saturday sessions, all children must have a parent or guardian present during the entire time. It is critical to the success of the program that all parents remain positive and encouraging during the session.

Having you participate educates you about soccer, provides a role model for your child, and helps give you the confidence to become a coach, referee, or board member in the future. Players get a uniform and a ball they may keep. They will treasure these.

Typical Saturday 1-hour sessions include:

  • Master coach working with kids & parents
  • Training activities and skill development games
  • 3 v 3 soccer game
  • Parent provided snack for the kids after the game

Every parent should take at least one turn as a game supervisor. The game supervisor's main role is to keep the games organized and fun for all the players. All other parents are encouraged to cheer positively and try to refrain from giving directions from the sideline.

This is the time for the kids to play – LET THEM!

For more details on the AYSO U5 Program, please read AYSO National U5 Guildelines. Reading these is especially important for all parents who participate in the U5 program.

In our region, the Master Coach is typically an AYSO Camp / UK Coach. Most administrative duties are handled by the U5 Program Manager.
