What is AYSO “EXTRA”

The EXTRA program in Ladera Ranch is one of the premiere competitive programs in youth soccer.  The objective of the AYSO “EXTRA” program is to provide top players within each region a more competitive playing experience than traditionally offered through the recreational primary program alone.  Players participating in this program will compete against EXTRA Play teams from other regions and local area’s during the primary “Extra” season.  Team formations start at U9-U16 for boys and girls.

How Can I Participate on an AYSO “EXTRA” Team?

Selection onto an AYSO “EXTRA” team is through a tryout process that is open to everyone registered as a player with AYSO. The tryout process will evaluate players on the basis of their complete skill set, including but not limited to defending, attacking, speed, ball control, game knowledge, attitude, and effort exhibited through drills and small-sided scrimmages.  If the EXTRA program sounds like the right program for your player and family, watch our calendar for try-out information.  Try-outs are generally held in the Winter after the Fall season ends.  The EXTRA program is a full-year program which means teams formed after the Winter tryout will play during the Spring season in order to prepare for the primary Fall EXTRA season.  EXTRA Players are prohibited from participated/playing on club teams while in the EXTRA Program.  For more information, see Section 11 Guidelines.

How is AYSO “EXTRA” different from Club soccer?

Both AYSO EXTRA soccer and Club soccer are competitive soccer programs targeting players that have a stronger desire and ability to play the great game of soccer. AYSO EXTRA focuses on the development of players in a competitive environment.  Coaches are hand selected and are coaching certified above and beyond their age group.  Professional trainers also work with teams/players in order to further develop and enhance their skills.

AYSO “EXTRA” is an AYSO program, thus, everyone plays means that every player will play a minimum of one-half the game. Club soccer teams do not guarantee playing time therefore limiting the individual player development at the youth levels.

  • Club soccer costs can vary between $1,500 - $2,000, depending upon the club and the number of tournaments that the team enters.  Coaching fees, player fees, club fees, ref fees, and travel costs can all add to the total individual player Club costs therefore making the “Extra” program an ideal option when looking for a youth program that offers a more competitive player experience.
  • Travel is increased in the Club environment due to the amount of tournaments Club teams will be required to participate in and those weekend tournaments may require overnight stay adding to the overall Club costs.
  • Many Club programs will use their bottom tier teams to carry their top tier teams by helping with the overall Club costs where in the EXTRA program all EXTRA teams are considered top tier teams.
  • Most all Club coaches are paid coaches therefore in order to increase their pay they may take on more teams during a single season which could impact the dedication available to your child’s team.  Many EXTRA coaches carry the same level or higher of coaching certification than some Club coaches and their coaching is on a volunteer basis.
