FAQ

These questions are the most frequently asked about our programs.

What are the age ranges of your programs?

We offer soccer to boys and girls ages 3 thru 18.

What age division will my child be in?

Please view our current Age Division breakdown by birthdate:

Region 188 MY2022 Age Division Breakdown (2022-23 Soccer Year)

What experience level do the kids need?

None, AYSO is a recreational program at heart and we welcome children with all experience levels.  There is an option for competitive play.

Where/When do I turn in my registration forms?

The registration form turn-in events are scheduled throughout the registration period.  When the region runs skills clinics there is generally an administrative member that can receive forms.  In all instances, keep an eye on your email or our Facebook page for the announcement of date/time/location for turn-in events.

What equipment does my child need?

Shinguards and athletic shoes are mandatory.  Cleats are recommended, but open toes shoes, slippahs, and flip-flops are not allowed.  Shinguards must be under the soccer socks and completely covered, the uniform (once issued) includes socks that will cover them.

Are uniforms included, or do I need to purchase them?

The registration fees cover the cost of the uniform consisting of a jersey, shorts, and socks.

What size ball does my child need?

While providing your own soccer ball isn't mandatory, your coach will definitely appreciate it.  Coaches are given a limited number of soccer balls and sometimes drills require each player to have a ball.
5U and 6U: Size 3
8U thru 12U: Size 4
14U and up: Size 5

How often and how long are the practices?

Practice dates and duration depends on the age group.
The 4U, 5U, and 6U programs is a 1-day per week event with a practice followed by a game.
The 8U and above divisions generally practice 2 days a week.  Older age groups sometimes have an optional 3rd practice day.
Rule of thumb on practice duration is it shouldn't exceed the length of the game at that age group.  Generally practices are 1 hour for 10U and above.

When will my team practice?
The practice days and times are set by the team's coach.  Generally the practices are Mon/Wed or Tue/Thu, with some starting as early as 1630 but most start between 1700 and 1800.
If you would like certain practice days we can try to accommodate but must follow the AYSO philosophy of Balanced Teams over scheduling requests.  If certain days are a necessity for your schedule, consider coaching, you set your practice days and times.

Where are practices and games held?

Depending on the age division the practice locations are different:

The 4U division holds its program at the Vickers Park Field at the intersection of Vickers Ave and 3rd St.
The 5U division holds its program at the Twin Palms Field across from the Hickam Officer's Club.
The 6U division holds its program at the 10U field on McChord St across from the Makai Rec Center.
The 8U division holds its program behind the Mokulele Elementary School.
The 10U division holds its program at the 10U field on McChord St across from the Makai Rec Center.
The 12U and older divisions hold practices at the Twin Palms Field across from the Hickam Officer's Club.
The 12U and older divisions play their games against other regions around Oahu.  None of these games are held on Hickam as other regions don't have base access.
Coaches may also elect to hold practices at other locations that better suit the team's schedule.

When are the games?

The 4U division holds its 1-day event on TBD.
The 5U division holds its 1-day event on Fridays at 1700.
The 6U division holds its 1-day event on Saturdays at 0800.
The 8U and above divisions play their games on Saturdays at differing times.

Can I request a certain coach?

Families may make a request for a certain coach but the priority in creating teams is the AYSO philosophy of Balanced Teams.

When will I know who my coach is?

The coaches are recruited along with the players.  The best case is we have returning coaches that continue from the previous season.  Sometimes we have to recruit new coaches before we can create teams.  Our hope and intent is to get rosters made and teams practicing 2 weeks before the start of the season.  If we are short coaches we may not be able to make this happen until we fulfill the needed coach positions.  Once all coaches are in place, the rosters will be created by the Age Group Coordinators and given to coaches, who will contact families shortly after to introduce themselves and inform them of practice days and times.

Can I request my child to play in a different age division?

Players are not allowed to play in an age division lower than the division they qualify for.  To verify your player's age division please see the link above for the birth year chart.
Players are allowed to play in an age division higher than their registered division.  This will be on a case-by-case basis depending on the skill level and maturity of the player, as well as roster strength of both the current and older age divisions.

When does the season start?

The Fall season typically starts around the 1st weekend of September (mid August for 16/18U).
The Winter season starts around the beginning of January.
The Spring season for 14U and above starts in March due to the school soccer season.

Who do I contact if I have questions not answered here?

You can always contact your Coach or Age Group Coordinator.  If they don't have the answers you can contact the Regional Commissioner or Assistant. See the Board Directory to get contacts.
