Referee Training

Courses in South Irvine Fall Season 2018

At present we have 3 Regional Referee Online Companion courses scheduled for the Fall season

  1. Saturday, August 25, 3:00-5:00
    Gabrielino Park, University Hills

  2. Monday, September 10, 6:00-8:00
    University Community Park soccer fields

During the course, we will be practicing the movement on the field of both the Assistant Referee and the Center Referee:  please dress in clothing that will allow you to run.

If you already have taken (and passed) the Regional Referee Online Course as well as the Safe Haven and Concussion courses, this is the last course you will need to qualify as a Regional Referee, and I can give you your referee kit (uniform, flags, cards, whistle, and badge) at the end of the class.  Please bring a printout of your Volunteer page in Blue Sombrero that shows your certifications or simply send it to me (mafuller "at" uci.edu) before the class to document that you have met the requirements.

Basic Referee Training Courses

There are two ways to obtain your Basic Referee certification:

  1. Complete online training via AYSOU and an in-person Basic Referee Companion course. Or,

Content

Prospective referees do not need to take a course from Region 144 as referee training is consistent throughout AYSO.  That said, the introductory Referee course comes in two flavors:  the more frequently offered variant is the Online Companion Course which supplements an online training students complete at their convenience prior to the classroom session.  The companion course focuses on referee mechanics, since the examination on the laws of the game is part of the online course.  The other variant is a more detailed eight-hour course, whose chief advantage is that it requires no preparatory work and the student can complete all certification requirements in a single day.

The list of available choices according to the type of class offered is available in AYSOU under "Instructor Led Courses.". Then select "Referee Instructor Led Courses."

Important:  Before registering for a course, one must first apply to be an AYSO volunteer, and all coach and referee volunteers must also complete two online trainings dealing with child safety, Safe Haven and concussion training  (see above).

Again, one may become a certified AYSO referee by taking the Basic referee class anywhere.
