Coach Training

Welcome!

Thank you to all coaches for volunteering. If you are interested in becoming a coach or assistant coach, note that no prior soccer experience is required up through the 12U age group. All you need is enthusiasm for teaching and working with children and a bit of organizational ability. AYSO's National Coach Training Program will help with the technical basics you need to get started as a coach or assistant coach.

Signing up and training to be a coach or assistant coach:

All volunteers who will work with children in AYSO are first required to register as a volunteer in Blue Sombrero. Please log into the site with your username and password, and complete a volunteer registration.

Once that is complete, all coaches and any other volunteers who will work with players must also complete the following two online training courses. These courses may be accessed at AYSOU.org, after completing a volunteer registration, by clicking the AYSOU link at the top of this page:
1) AYSO's "Safe Haven": AYSO's Safe Haven was developed to protect both children and volunteers. The program covers protection guidelines, safety and injury prevention as well as the important of role modeling sporting behavior and supporting the philosophies of AYSO.
2) the CDC's Concussion Awareness training: By taking this free, online course and using what you learn, you will be well positioned to improve the culture of concussion. Your actions can help create a safe environment for young athletes so that they can stay healthy, active, and thrive - both on and off the playing field. If you have already completed a CDC Concussion Awareness course previously for coaching another youth sport, you may not need to take it again if you have your certificate.

Coaches must also complete an AYSO age-specific training course for each age division in which you desire to coach. This applies even if you have previously completed training for an older division, for example 10U, and you now want to coach a younger division such as 6U or 8U. Age-specific required training may be taken at one of our courses here in Region #1099 (Half Moon Bay and Coastside), or in any other AYSO region over the hill or elsewhere. Course schedule is as follows:

6U Coach, live, 2 hours: Completed for Fall 2017, next course will be prior to Spring season, 2018, date TBD
8U Coach, live, 2 hours:  Completed for Fall 2017, next course will be prior to Spring season, 2018, date TBD
10U Coach, live 3 hours:  Completed for Fall 2017, next course will be prior to Spring season, 2018, date TBD

Advanced Coach (required for 16U and 19U), live 20 hours with evaluation:
Not offered in HMB in 2017, next course TBD

To search for a local course and to register for a course, please go to AYSOU.org, and log in with your local Blue Sombrero username and password. Click "AYSOU" at the top of this page to go there directly.

Courses are paid for by your local AYSO region. A small fee may be assessed for Intermediate and Advanced courses, but if you are a Region #1099 Coach (HMB and Coastside) please contact me in advance of registering to get a voucher to cover the fee, or to arrange for reimbursement after taking the course. A coaching manual is provided with every course. AYSO Coach manuals may be available for purchase online as well, as e-Books. Online resources are also available at AYSOU.org.

If anyone in HMB/Coastside has any questions or needs more information on becoming an AYSO coach, please email me at [email protected].

Thank you and have a great season!

Best wishes,

David George
