First Practice and Tips for a Successful Season

If you are new to soccer or new to our Region, welcome! We hope you and your child have a wonderful experience with AYSO. Here's some information on what to bring to your first practice:

Soccer ball:
Every child needs their own soccer ball at practice for drills. Ball size depends on your child's division, as follows:
 DivisionsBall Size
 5U, 6U and 8U3
 10U and 12U4
 14U, 16U and 19U5

Cleats:
Soccer cleats are required for all divisions except U5, where a simple athletic shoe will suffice. Please make sure you get "soccer" cleats, not baseball or some other sport.  Keep in mind that most teams will practice on grass and have games on either grass or artificial turf. Here is a link with more information than you ever wanted to know about soccer cleats. Or check out our free Gear Swap Box available on game days at the Cunha fields and at registration events.

Shin Guards:
Required for safety at all games and practices. Also available at our free Gear Swap Box.

Water bottle:
Make sure your player stays hydrated with a full water bottle.

Uniform:
The uniform is included in your registration fee for 5U-10U and is distributed by your coach before the first game. 12U and older players must purchase a uniform, which can be reused in future seasons. Upper division families will be contacted by a uniform coordinator to order your uniform.

Tips for a successful season:
  • Please try to arrive early to practices and games so you are ready to start on time and please be punctual when picking up your player. Our volunteer coaches are busy and are not free babysitting!
  • If you would like your player to walk home or to get a ride with another parent, please provide your coach with a written note.
  • As a courtesy, please notify your coach if you will miss or be late for practices or games.
  • You are welcome to watch the practice, but only certified coaches are allowed to actively work with the kids. If you want to help out, check out our [Volunteers] page or contact [email protected] to find out how to become a certified volunteer.
  • Remember, kids come first in AYSO. Please read and abide by the AYSO Kids Zone Pledge (see below) at AYSO practices and games. If you cannot honor Kids Zone, then please do not attend practices or games.

Kids Zone Pledge

In AYSO, we want all players, coaches, families and volunteers to have fun. Kids Zone is a program that encourages fans on the sidelines, and anyone else near the play, to use positive language, show sportsmanship in their attitude and behavior, and create a great experience for every player. It’s a reminder that the soccer fields are a kid’s zone – a friendly, happy, wholesome place for children to play.

No matter how intense the game can be, kids need cheerful support from the sidelines.  In order to promote this positivity, we ask parents and spectators to sign the "Kids Zone Pledge"  and agree to the following guidelines:

  1. Kids are No. 1.
  2. Fun, not winning is everything.
  3. Fans only cheer, and only coaches coach.
  4. No yelling in anger.
  5. Respect the volunteer referees.
  6. No swearing or abusive behavior.
  7. No alcohol, tobacco or drugs.
  8. No weapons.
  9. Leave no trash behind.
  10. Set a proper example of sportsmanship.
When it comes down to it, Kids Zone is about supporting every child on the field - even those on the opposing team. It means supporting the players whether they win or lose. It means honoring the game – not the outcome of the game. Remember, respect starts with you!
